Mee Marathi mulgi nahi ho—( hope that is right) pan me soonbhai ahe.
The Marathi manoos is an interesting word coined by the media. And Balasaaheb and Bhausaheb (Raj Thackeray ) both claiming the loyalty of the Marathi Manoos.
Coming to think what either Narendra Modi or Bhausaheb is offering is the redemption of the gujju or Marathi identity. Enough times I wished that Randheera Kantirava would emerge to revive the Kannada spirit. Bhag naa—amachi thi Marathi matari aahe naa—thi guh—Shobha De, she was so confused thychi identity badhal now she has accepted publicly in TOI that she is Marathi mulgi, pan zantye zaali manoon, Matari manaicha.
Look at what Modi did, he gave the gujju’s their identity back and now he is feeding the only thing that excites them i.e. business ventures, he has made it the destination ideal. Maybe that is what Bhausaheb has to work on. Jashi amchi Marathi Matari manthe Bhausaheb attah phasa palat.
My poor mother-in-law must be cringing at my Marathi. Ek theer do shikaar.

Pulse pressure,
A precedent to the BT Brinjal is the defamation of the Lathyrus Sattivus.
In India it is known as Lakhodi, Khesari, Tikhadi and Tidwa. In Ethiopia it is called as Guaya and is known as grass peas in English.
Its original habitat is unknown but is cultivated as beds, in Ethiopia, India, France... Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Ethiopia and France grow and consume it. It is grown in Maharashtra, Bihar, Chhattisgarh areas in India.

Scientific classificationಇನ್ಗ್ದೊಮPlantae
Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Magnoliopsida
Order: Fabales
Family: Fabaceae
Subfamily: Faboideae
Tribe: Vicieae
Genus: Lathyrus
Species: L. sativus
Immature seeds can be eaten like green peas, while mature one is cooked.
Lathyrism
This was incriminated for a crippling motor neuron disease called Lathyrism. Hence banned by the government. Medical texts say it is Lathyrism may occur if more than 400gms are consumed/day consistently for 3months. What happens here the gluteal muscles (the muscles forming the buttocks) tend to have extensive cell death, particularly the motor neurons causing paralysis or lack of strength or an inability to move the lower limbs.
But Lathyrism is where similar to magnesium poisoning, and the studies and survey were conducted in the Bhandara district, where extensive magnesium mining is done.
Pulsating points.
· Proteins 1 ½ more than either thuvar or chana dal
· Iron content 3 times greater.
· Calcium cotenant very high.
· If cultivated after paddy it requires no irrigation, no nutritional inputs, no weeding or soil turning.
· Draught and flood resistant.
· Excellent fodder material.
Before the ban
1920 research begins.
1928 R.McCarren, director of deficiency diseases inquiry Pasteur institute coonoor found no connection between Lathyrism and Lentil
1940 RLH Michins a Brit scientist exonerated Lathyrus from Lathyrism
1950 C.Gopalan of Nutritional research laboratory H’bad starts research.
1966 Govt. bans Lathyrus 6mnths before Gopalan could submit its report.
Currently Sri Shantilal Kothari, (Nagpur based Nutritionist) is trying to get the ban lifted. He is the man behind India’s first indigenous Soya milk production.
If Lathyrus is allowed to be legally grown and marketed both its quantity and quality would improve. Its market entry price would be around 13—15Rs/kg. This would shoot down the sky rocketing pulse price.
Now since it is cheaper than thuvar or china dal hotels tend to use it as substitute of the other two dhal or to blatantly adulterate thuvar dal.
India is the only country where Lathyrus is banned. The events charting the decision show some vested interest in banning the lentil.

Corporate agriculture.
Pakistan is considering corporate agriculture.
The agreement is individuals continue to own the land. The corporate leases the land from the owners to grow vegetables, which is to be exported to their countries. Tax holidays are offered to the investors. Middle East and gulf already has land stakes in Pakistan.
How would this affect us I wonder?
As for corporate agriculture it is loosely a business of agriculture it includes the entire chain—i.e. seed supply, agro chemicals, food processing, machinery, storage, transport distribution, marketing advertising and retail sale.
Contract farming works in a slight different manner, in the sense the buyer has already paid X-amount to the farmer with the commitment that X-volume of output is given to him. This provides financial security and improves the small farmer, without eating him up. The onus of risk is still with the farmer.
This risk gets eliminated by corporate farming since most corporate houses are either retrenching investments or growing their raw product.
The government touts (both India and Pakistan) corporate farming as solution to the problems of the agrigarian, this will set them free to focus on technocracy where the cut backs are greater. Some laws are also modified to accommodate this concept.
But the farmer will be required to plant the contractor’s crop, on his land, harvest and deliver. The equation being
Contractor (material input, technical advice) --àß farmer (land and labour)
PepsiCo came up with corporate farming in 1989 at hoshiarpur, for its tomato farm; subsequently it has entered basmati, groundnut oil and spices. Many farmers feel this tells on the natural ecology and resource balance of the terrain. To the corporate profit is the only focus and does not see any reason why it should coincide with ecological requirement of the region.
Other issues are dropping price agreed upon quoting inferior quality as an issue.
Farmers in Paksitan are quite skeptic due to massive bureaucracy involvement.
Their observation on Pakistan’s general trend of things and India’s experience with corporate houses is that the small and middle level farmers get hit. The corporate come with hidden costs.
One option that a farmer from west Punjab is that the farmers form a co-operative more along the lines of Amul. And localized strains of grains and cereals should be alternated as per the traditional pattern. May be it is time that a citizen’s charter took note of this.

Career women,
In her article on higher education Vimala Ramachandran claims that large number of women get married and do not engage in any work.
Presuming that she runs a house too, she must be aware of the amount of work that is involved in having a smoothly run household, the time-management and multitasking.
If we are talking about giving clothes to the laundry, getting a maid to clean up they are forms of outsourcing which many women do not do. Particularly if they home bound. There are people who still subscribe to “penny saved is penny earned” nothing wrong with it.
Probably what she means is that these women do not wear a “power suit” and go out to work. But there are so called working women who outsource their household responsibilities, come to the office to do mundane tasks , take their coffee and lunch break, buy stuff from the salesmen visiting their work place do they really contribute enough to the home economy or are they paying a hidden price?
Isn’t true empowerment a freedom of choice?

School dropouts
Ms. Vimala ramachandran’s article in the Hindu talked to right to education (Aug.9th)
A valid issue.
She reckons that considerable percentage of children do not attend school beyond standard 10, she puts it down to the inefficient system and poverty etc. We can debate about this till the cows come home.
She also reckons that NGO’s can help propagate education and that foreign aid is available for it both expertise and monetary wise.
Sometimes I wonder if we are over emphasizing this point of undergraduate etc. This question has popped after a peek view to the world of school dropouts.
Urvi is the daughter of an IAS officer, after standard 10 i.e. at the age of 14 she decided to drop out of structured schooling. Simply because she was not sure what she wanted to do. She has decided to take up a job till she figures out.
Divya has opted out of formal school too, she did a basic beauty course and works for a parlor she is picking along distance education and IGNOU courses as and when she see’s it right and up her need and interest.
Ravi is again a 10th standard dropout; he got sick of being singled out as the average sibling in a bouquet of brilliant ancestors and siblings. He started his career at a shoe factory, the flak that he had to face was tremendous, but today 25 years later he has an exceeding profitable leather goods manufacturing unit. His contention is that he has learnt the skills he needs, like a distance education program in tannery, one on shoe designing, one on business management. Very categorically he states my learning is ongoing, yes I did not have formal education that’s a different thing.
So it for Naveen a dental lab technician who after standard 10 joined his brother-in-law as man Friday, today 20yrs later he is a big name and has a thriving outfit. He goes annually to Germany for a 15 days hands down retreat. Again he does not regret not having formal education.
My maid Haseena’s son told me why bother with schooling and degrees, after that it is a pain to get a job. Working as a mechanic I learn the trade and earn simultaneously.
Look at the number of mid life career changes or people who have formal college in one stream and working in another.
Maybe the issues here are literacy and education vis-à-vis education and knowledge.
More importantly why salivate for a foreign aid; if it is important enough we pick ourselves and work towards it.

Flogging a dead horse.
History is winner’s story, each person has their own view, Jinnah, Nehru, Gandhi, Patel whoever, it is 60yrs gone now, generation that experienced it is easing out, as the generation that was born in it. What are we fighting about?
The great sub continental psyche, a modern day Mahabharata between the cousins, the Brits must be laughing their a*e off. Since we cannot pin point the etiology there is point in cracking our head over it. Its time to move on.
If you notice all the voices that sniffing are voice of ownership and not inclusion.
Think about it carefully the Jinnah or Gandhi we know are a shadowy humans, they are no more flesh and blood, at least to us, shadow has not yet faded out as the generation that has seen, experienced and lived the freedom movement have handed down their direct memory. But to my children these are just name, their concept of Gandhi is the man who inspired Munnabhai.
Lets see, how we can walk the path of inclusion.
May be deleting the religion and caste would go a long way.
More important we need to upgrade ourselves from literacy to education. Not maculae’s but as per our need, hands on practical education.
Enquiring after a person’s religion and caste should be a criminal offense punishable by law.

When those flights of fantasies’ are on,
I imagine that I am a writer, my writing “tehlka machayegi” I imagine, the story line, its translation to script and works. Only to be brought back to earth to attend to a stinking mouth. My woes apart.
My last fantasy was a political thriller. I had the mind map set. the theme a political thriller
Genre political thriller.
Synopsis. The prime minster’s son a dashing dynamic upcoming leader ( all euphemism for a backyard bully) is all set to be declared the prince of whales at the party, out of sheer ecstasy he flies the blue skies, waving out the young heroine with open hair standing on green fields, don’t miss the background of sarson ke phool. ----- crash.---- funeral eulogies.
Cut 2 the scion of the Royal house, is adopted by the Prime minister to take on the power game, suave, politically graceful, Cambridge educated again poised for the throne flies to the capital on an emergency secret call from the PM -- crash the plane goes – funeral and eulogies.
Cut 3 the flamboyant debonair fund raiser for the party, the prime minister of course does not plan to nominate him prince of whales, she has someone up her sleeve but he is to be wazir, guess what secret summons again a flight that crashes – funeral and eulogies.
Cut 4 the dark caverns of vindhya hidden is the high-tech cell of RAW/CBI/CIA/FBI whatever is the current fancy even ATS is okay with us. – Sanju baba heads this outfit. Case I “bees saal purani hai par band nahi huyi” “case 2 dus saal se pending hai, but vaastav mein band nahi” “abh yeah”
This is where I get stuck who should be the villain?
· Yeah is party ka taqdheer hai ki koi bhi umadta sitara tikta nahi – this will encourage a tantric dance( item number) and some jantar mantar.
· A freedom fighter who wants the power so he is playing a loyalist in public and killing the rivals deviously. – this will give us a good car chase.
· Videshi hath – this will let our hero go abroad and we can have foreign locales.
· Aur kya kareen?
Kuch bhi kahiye, congress ke katha tho dhansu hai.
Think of all the potential woman power, which can ignite the K-series and Ekta Kapoor out. The widow of each dead hero, the mother, sister, secretary all fighting for the power, a daughter the crown princess, her husband as another power monger. Ya kuddah, not bad at all if only I have the patience to write it down.

Let’s shop for a political party.
Since BJP is performing Ghatashraddha, and Nehru-Gandhi clan is against my upbringing. I’m at a lurch, who do I back, particularly at the post dinner conversations in the departmental dinners .
Okay so all those who are disappointed in BJP can help me here and help themselves.
Let’s shop for a political party.
The first hurdle arose— I’ve decided to follow fellow blogger and friend of youthful follies rlakshman’s advice—( his advice was how to buy a laptop) ( he always was a good guy to be around when you contemplate mischief) so let—me—make a list of what I’m looking for. Sitting down to make a list of what I would like in a political party. Since I’m at it, I decided to make the list in earnest. Here is my criteria.
· How active would I like the govt. to be in people’s life? should they take care of basic needs? Should people be responsible for their behavior? Or is it somewhere in between.
· We probably need to make our minds up about issues that are important and not let political parties push their views.
Coming to choosing the parties, I discovered that most parties fell into some “isms” or the other. So the ism could be
ü Capitalism—an economic system in which the means of production and distribution are privately or corporately owned and development is proportionate to the accumulation and reinvestment of profits gained in a free market.
ü Communism—capitalism is viewed as exploitation and oppression that would eventually lead to imperialism and monopoly.
ü Socialism – freedom, equality, production for use and not profit, employment, worker and community control(?) and ecological harmony ---sounds impressive
ü Environmentalism desperately needed in India, can’t find anyone, and am too lazy to float a party.
ü Conservatism – A political philosophy or attitude emphasizing respect for traditional institutions, distrust of government activism, and opposition to sudden change in the established order
ü Libertinism--One who defies established religious precepts; a freethinker.
Let’s look at our available options:
Indian National Congress (INC, led by Party President: Sonia Gandhi)
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, led by Party President: led by Rajnath Singh)
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP, led by Party President:Mayawati)
Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM, led by Party General Secretary:Prakash Karat)
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP, led by Party President:Sharad Pawar)
Communist Party of India (CPI, led by Party General Secretary:AB Bardhan
With so many parties it did make sense to check the manifestos, that’s where I was stumped. nobody had any vision, goal or concrete “to do” plans. the congress manifesto was mudslinging BJP and visaversa, at least the above parties had some stuff that they could pass off as manifestos-but superstar chiranjeevi’s party is a no manifesto party.
Some individuals from academics are slowly foraying into the political arena, trying to tap the hip urban middle class voters. Professional people’s party from Pune, Shiva Khera’s bharatiya rashtravadi Samantha party and jago party are a few. These are definitely trying to do the Lokasatta. They do have interesting manifestos though how practical I don’t know.
One interesting party was Jago party. You can check the details out at www.jago.in
The top 5 points in their policies are as follows:
1. Reservation for none, job for everyone through free English education.
2. Hang terrorists, murderers, rapists & corrupts; Judgments in 3 months.
3. All voters will get Rs 800 p.m. in lieu of subsidies.
4. 24 hrs electricity & comfortable train journey through privatization; less government activities & more private enterprises.5. No Income Tax up to Rs 4 lakh; Reduction in the number and rates of taxes.
Here’s what Shiva Khera has to offer, through his Bharatiya Rashtravadi Samata Party
What we stand for
VISION
:
To bring respect and dignity for every citizen by making India physically, mentally, morally and economically strong.
MISSION
:
Freedom through Education and Justice by eradication of corruption, crime, injustice and poverty and bring equal opportunity for every citizen.
What we stand against
This party is formed to fight against:
Corruption & InjusticePoverty & HungerIlliteracy & UnemploymentTerrorism & Social Crime
With all this no one talks of the things that really concern me. (These could be quirks to others)
ü Environment
ü Health – focus on preventive health, and not drug therapy, prophylactic or otherwise.
ü Import restriction on global garbage like diaper, instant food, etc.
ü Education—not literacy
ü Employment—not creating jobs for the engineers, doctors, and MBA but finding the right people for the jobs we have to offer.,in professions that we need people in.
ü The Indian identity—again goes back to education.
May be I need to shop some more. I need expert help so may be my super shopper sister in law Mona can help. She will be thrilled that I considered shopping at least here. Her grouse against me is I hate shopping.
Still better, I here by resolve to excavate my buried voter’s card, make a personal wish list of what I would want my representative to do, and hand it to the candidate if and when they land at my door step.
Here I rest in peace.
Okay so all those who are disappointed in BJP can help me here and help themselves.

Here I rest in peace.

what ails BJP?
BJP are you into Harakiri?
· Raje, proves her royalty by digging heels and resisting what she thinks is not right.
· Arun shourie exhibits his English exposure calling the party Alice in Blunderland and Humpty Dumpty
Just been reading an excerpts’ from a conversation with Prof. Dwijendra Tripathi, of IIM-A
The start point is of course Jaswant Singh being Just-not-wanted, the cause being cited is his insult of Sardar Patel in his book on Jinnah. Fine we’ll give that. What we learnt was Sardar Patel was a Congressman, a man who put Gandhi’s word over the countries interest.( He stepped aside for Nehru to become prime minister at Gandhi’s request)
Question is why does BJP need Sardar Patel? Is it because they need an iconic figure. After all the congress has patented the Gandhi-Nehru brigade. While Savarkar, or Deendayal Upadhyaya or Madhav Golwalkar are interred in the annals of history. Even when referred to they do not whip up that glitz that excites—I’m not talking about inspire here. While Dasharath Nandan Ram could be a myth.
Again why Sardar Patel?—was he not the man who banned RSS post Gandhi assassination. Well Prof.Tripathi says that Sardar would bow to no one’s pressure not even Gandhi let alone Nehru. He did bow down to the public pressure which held the RSS responsible for the assassination.
No matter how much I dislike Bachi karkaria and writing she is right when she says, BJP is like Alice, when asked who are you it can only say ” This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. I - I hardly know, sir I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then."
So where does Sardar Patel gel with BJP. Interestingly what does BJP represent now? May be it is time that they whipped up their manifesto, and built a vision board. If it does gel with our visions the avam will support them no doubt. Its dicey now as we don’t even know what we are supporting. The vision is enticing enough we shall even vote them to power, icons or no icons.

Nothing much ado about.
A monocle, and a suit, to me Jinnah is the visual created by PG Wodehouse as Lord Emsworth. This was then brought to life by snippets narrated by my Nehru-baiting grandmother.
But my actual realization of Jinnah as an individual with romance and family tree came with an article on Jinnah and his Bombay roots in the Illustrated Weekly. That’s when I discovered his Wadia connection too.
Being born a Ismaili Khoja, nurtured in Britain, if he were addressed as Maulana Jinnah he would have found it an absurdity himself. Yet he was not beyond donning the sherwani to demand for Pakistan.
From Mrs. Sarojini Naidu’s chronicles, Jinnah was idealistic and aimed to be a Muslim Gokhale, (it would be educative to my generation and generations after me, to know what gokhale stood for after all we are been flushed down with Nehru-Gandhi)
One thing that struck to me then too, was Jinnah’s view keeping politics and religion separate. That would be great for after religion and sex are personal. Equanimity and equality is just a point of view, of the same base reaction. This would stop all this segregation, and religion based politics and it would also recognize people beyond their religion. People would stop quoting that nonsense where a catholic party president( that’s mrs. Gandhi’s only claim--), steps aside for a Sikh Prime minister who was sworn in by a Muslim President to rule a Hindu majority country. This according to me is the ultimate insult to both Dr.Kalam and Dr.Manmohan singh after they are stalwarts academically. Their religion is an incidental affair.
To quote Jinnah during the moments of partition from Quaid-e-Azam, he had become Quatil-e-Azam.
Coming back to my rambling. I was looking at the title
· Mohandas Karmchand Gandhi was called the Mahatma, he never once protested its use. Which given the image that he built he should have.
· Pundit Nehru, was not a man of religion but a British educated WOG,
· Interestingly Maulanaji was a man of religion. He was a Maulvi.

Jinnah the boogie man
Democracy is freedom after speech.
Taking away the boogie man or the dream is a crime, and crime does not go unpunished. Which is what Mr.Jaswant Singh has done, he has laid to rest the Boogie man Jinnah and exposed the another view of Nehru which is very obvious when you read books of the era, particularly ones dealing with Nehru’s family written by his own family.
These opinions have been expressed by a lot of people of the generation that was involved in the freedom struggle. Of course the people who stayed back with the congress refuse to acknowledge this.
It was never Gandhi Vs Jinnah; it was always Nehru vs. rest of the real leaders.
Its not that Nehru did not have his aura, he was perfect poster boy, a WOG who learnt his Indian heritage at Oxford/Cambridge (this is something I never get right) knew his French and wines. He did not come from an established Royal family that made him aam-aadmi most important both Gandhi and the British were enamored by him.
What is surprising is the congress is keeping quite over this while BJP is the one creating the fuss, is it because Jinnah is Muslim while Nehru was a Hindu?
Mr. Singh it is really brave of you to take on such a risk and let the younger generation know the some aspects the Raj ridden India.
After all judgments’ are made only after hearing both sides. And History is always documented by the winner of war, kyon ki battle to abh bhi baaki hai.

This was information that made its round through the internet, maybe we need to look at it.

The Hindu group, the ananda bazaar patrika group, the eenadu group, the Malayalam manoram group the mathrubhumi group the Sahara group the bhasker group and the Dainik Jagaran group.
The ownership of different media agencies have been traced to these.

Star TV is run by an Australian who is supported by St. Peters Pontifical church Melbourne
Hindustan times owned by Birla group. But hands have changed since shobhana bhartiya took over. Presently it working in collaboration with times group.
The Hindu English daily started over 125 years has been recently taken over by Joshua society, Berne, Switzerland. N.ram’s wife is a Swiss national
Indian express divided into two groups. The Indian express and new Indian express (the south Indian edition) ACTS Christian ministries have major stake in Indian express and the latter is still with Indian counterpart.

Adult franchise.
Did you know that there is a system in out constitution as per the 1969 act, in section 49-0 that a person can go the polling both confirm his identity get his finger marked and convey the presiding election officer that he doesn’t want to vote anyone!
Yes such a feature is available but obviously these seemingly notorious leaders have never disclosed it. This called “49-0”
Why should you go and say “ I vote nobody” because, in a ward if a candidate wins say by 123 votes and that particular ward has received more than 123, then that polling will be cancelled and will have be re-polled. Not only, that but the candidature of the contestants will be removed and they cannot contest the re-poling, since people had already expressed their decision on them. This would bring fear into parties and hence look of genuine candidates for their parties for election. This would change the way, of our whole political system. It is seemingly surprising why the election commission has revealed such a feature to the public.
This is no doubt an powerful weapon in the hands of the public- but a public declaration of this would mean rendering the voter vulnerable to the undesirable political elements.
Is there any such option for contesting two constituencies, which was not permitted until Mrs, Indira Gandhi had an amendment passed.
